This popular annual event takes place each year on a
Friday evening generally in early November in the Village
Hall.
Teams of four
(any age, any mix) compete over eight rounds of ten
quiz questions (some with 'sound' and 'pictures').
Each team is charged an entry fee of £8 (£2
per person). Profits from the evening go to charity.
The winning
team receives the Silk Trophy.
The runners
up are presented with the Eric Blanks Cup.
The questions
are usually set by the winners from the previous year.
Refreshments (tea and coffee) are
available during the evening.
The 19th running
of the Brains of Radley in 2009 saw
ten teams take part. The winners were The Eternal Optimists
with 92 points out of a maximum possible of 104 and
the runners up were The Ramblers with 83 points. The
questions were set by last year's winners, Pieces of
Eight. The profits from the evening of £80 were
presented to Friends of Radley Station to help them
keep Radley station a pleasant place. Special thanks
to Eric Blanks for compering the evening, though sadly
Eric has announced his retirement from the event. Thanks
to nd Mary Blanks for he teas, Chris Gasson for presenting
the prizes as Clerk of the Green Cloth and to Hook Norton
Brewery, Radley Village Shop and the Bowyer Arms for
donating raffle prizes.
Only six teams
competed in 2008 though the evening
raised £107 for the Church Beetle Fund. The winners
this year were the Dales family in a team called 'Pieces
of Eight' with a great score of 84 and a half (ten points
ahead of the Wise Ones in second place). Questions were
set by last year's winners, 'Radley Choir Boys'. Special
thanks to Eric and Mary Blanks for again helping with
compering the contest and making the tea.
The closely
fought competition in 2007 was won
by the Radley Choirboys and Girl, who finished just
half a point ahead of the Wise Ones and the Everhopefuls.
The Wise Ones took second place on a tie-break. The
evening was organised by the previous year's winners,
the Sundials, a who donated the proceeds of £91
to their nominated charity, the British Heart Foundation.
